Making a "Fall-Tastic" Fall Pot

Wow, is it Fall time yet?

Around this time every year I know I am always ready for 60 degree days, pumpkin flavored coffee, and for fall colors to fill my home. One of my absolute favorite things to do is to create my fall time pot! Pitch those summer annuals and get out the mums and cabbages. Here at Sundown we carry a variety of fall annuals including mums, ornamental cabbages, kale, peppers, and so much more. Inside the Garden Shop we also have artificial flowers and foliage picks to create a show stopping “Fall-Tastic” Fall Pot.

Much like our spring and summertime pots, we still want to fill our three categories: Filler, Spiller, and Thriller.

As you can see in the picture above, we have our filler (mums, cabbage, peppers, and aster), spiller (creeping jenny and sweet potato vine), and thriller (grass and pumpkins).

Now you do not have to follow this exact mold. You can be as creative or bold as you want!

HOw do i take care of my fall pot?

Once you have created your beautiful and fun pot, you’ll need to care for it to keep the plants nourished and thriving.

Like our spring / summer pots, you should still fertilize your plants to promote growth and blooming. Our favorite to use on our potted plants is the Jack’s Classic Blossom Booster. Fertilization should be done every 7-14 days, much like a thorough watering.

When it comes to watering fall pots, it is very important to water under the plants directly onto the soil rather than watering through the blooms and foliage. Watering from the top of the plants can cause damage to leaves and blooms. This will make your flowers look unattractive and more than likely you will have to switch flowers out for new ones.

Although deadheading is not necessary on any of these plants, some of us may find ourselves finding dead blooms that you want gone! You can easily go around your pot and pick off any old looking blooms without damaging the plant. This will promote new growth and keep your plants looking fresh and new!
